The Essex Association of Change Ringers   President: The Right Reverend the Lord Bishop of Chelmsford

Update on the Bellringers Memorial

Many of you will be aware from AGM discussions over several years of the plan to update the Bellringers Memorial in Chelmsford Cathedral.

There was an article in last August’s ‘Rounds and About’ Newsletter showing a mock-up of the planned changes.

As some there have been some recent enquiries, I have attached more information on those that are being commemorated – some of this is based on articles that were published in The Ringing World 2014-2018 for the commemoration of World War I.

There are four distinct milestones in the creation of the memorial:

  • Approval of the Portland stone sample and purchase of the stone – the Cathedral authorities have recently approved the stone sample.
  • Approval of the detailed lettering layout – this is expected early in the New Year
  • Carving the stone lettering
  • Installation in the Cathedral.

If completed in time, dedication of the memorial could form part of the service at the 2025 AGM.

If you, or your tower, wish to make a contribution towards the cost, there is still an opportunity to do so.   You may make this by bank transfer to “The Essex Association of Change Ringers” 60-05-13 a/c 22177035 quoting reference “Memorial 2024”.   The reference is essential.  If you are able to Gift Aid this donation (which will increase the value of the donation by 20%) you must email the Association Treasurer at treasurer@eacr.org.uk to confirm this and he will arrange the necessary declarations if you do not already have Gift Aid set up.  Donor and donation information will remain confidential in the Treasurer’s records unless you give permission for it to be disclosed.
